Wakeboard Your Way to the Tampa Convention Center!

Okay, that wouldn’t be possible unless you’re prepared to Wakeboard a long ways on the west coast of Florida. On July 12th- 14th, the Red Bull Wake Open is coming to Tampa, Fl. This event is expected to attract thousands of  people and it will also be broadcasted live on NBC .  This event is the opening of Red Bull’s signature series, so others like it will be broadcasted throughout 2012 on national television.

Furthermore, this competition is going to determine the World’s best wakeboarders in 3 categories: cable, big air, and boatwater.  This means that athletes from all over the World will be judged by their maneuverability over the wake, their velocity ,  and the amount of air or hangtime they can achieve during each jump.

What is wakeboarding?

Wakeboarding is an extreme watersport where the athlete rides the waves generated by a boat. These waves (wakes) can be different sizes depending on what type of boat is towing the rider.  Instead of skis, the rider uses a board (similar to a snowboard) to ride these waves which allows them more maneuverability and it also allows them to perform certain tricks when they go over the boat wakes. I would recommend watching the following videos if you want to see what Wakeboarding is like.

It’s probably safe to say that this event will be similar to last year’s Red Bull Flutag event  – which took place at the Convention Center as well. This means there will be many great options when it comes to watching this event such as, the bridge that connects Downtown Tampa and Harbour Island, the Pavilion, Jackson’s Bistro, Davis Island, and more.

The admission is free, but you may have to pay for parking. There are a number of parallel parking spots in Downtown Tampa but we recommend the following places:

Lanier Parking – This parking garage charges a one time fee that is usually cheap ($5 if I recall correctly) and it’s near a few restaurants (Pizza Pazza and Cafe Dufrains).

Premier Parking – 401 South Florida Ave Tampa, FL 33602, this is only a short walk from the Tampa Bay Convention Center. It is slightly closer to all the downtown restaraunts than Lanier Parking.

The parking garage on 810 Channelside Drive – This parking garage is meant to be for cruise ship vacationers, but it is also open to the public. This garage is at the main Channelside area so this is the place to go if you’re new to Tampa. There will be many different restaurants to chose from as well as many shops  where you could buy souvenirs or gifts for your friends and family.  There is also a Hooters if you’re looking for hot wings and beer. Lastly, this garage is near a trolly station which runs to Downtown, Tampa.

Don’t forget to put on sunscreen!

Please stay tuned for our follow up post to this competition.  If you are a wakeboarder or know someone who is going to compete in this competition, then we would like to hear from you.
